28 weeks

Saturday, May 11, 2013

How far along:  28 weeks

How big is baby:  baby now weighs 2 and a quarter pounds and measures approximately 14.8 inches

Weight gain: 16-17 pounds total

Stretch marks: none

Sleep: Could be better, could be worse. Lots of tossing and turning some nights.

Cravings/aversions: I'm back to craving strawberries big time this week

Maternity clothes: oh yes

Movement: lots

What I'm loving: It's a strange feeling. I am so looking forward to meeting this baby and expanding our family, but I'm really loving soaking up all the alone time with Isaac that I can. It's really hitting me that our time as a family of 3 is almost over and I'm trying to enjoy every minute of it.

Symptoms: maybe not necessarily a symptom, but my hair is shedding like crazy. I thought you weren't supposed to lose as much hair during pregnancy, but it is constantly coming out in the shower and throughout the day now. I can also feel the fatigue creeping back in again. I do ok during the day, but as soon as I put Isaac to bed at night I just want to collapse for the rest of the night.

What I'm looking forward to: I'm ready to see this baby. This is likely my last pregnancy so I don't want to rush it or wish it away, but I'm ready to meet this little guy and get to know him.

Best moment of the week: getting a good report at my doctor appointment this week

How I'm feeling: better this week. I went Friday for my ultrasound and 28 week check-up. The tech quickly measured baby boy (and yes, we did confirm that he is a boy --no surprises at birth) and showed us a few things, then went on to check on the placenta, the real reason we were there. No one ever told us how big he is measuring and I forgot to ask, I had my mind on the placenta issue. We did see, however, that his head and abdomen were measuring around 31 weeks (!) and his legs were measuring around 28 weeks, so he's still a little on the big side.

We did find out that the placenta has moved up and away from the cervix. At 19 weeks it was completely covering the cervix (complete placenta previa) and yesterday it was measuring 1.5-1.7 cm away from the edge of the cervix. They like to see it at 2 cm or more, but everyone seemed pleased with the progress. The best news is that it is moving in the posterior direction. If it was anterior, it runs the risk of attaching too deeply to my first c-section scar and making the next c-section much more complicated. We know that is not a risk now so we are thrilled with that news. We saw a new doctor yesterday and he seemed very laid back about the whole situation and not really that concerned, so that's my attitude for now. They'll probably do another ultrasound to check around 36 weeks.

Yesterday at the ultrasound he was head down with his back on my right side and his arms and legs on my left side. That's his typical position. My belly is usually a little lopsided because of that. His legs were so curled that his knees were right in front of his face. I've never had an ultrasound at this point. With Isaac I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks, 19 weeks, and 39 weeks, so it was fun to see my baby at this size.

Thanks, girls! The side view is much more flattering than the front. I feel as wide as a house when I see the front view!
