Two year ago today...my sweet nephew Corbin was born into this world.
Two years ago today...my not-yet-fiancee graduated with his master's degree.
Two years ago today...my parents met R's parents for the first time.
May 5, 2007 was a stressful day for me. It was supposed to be a happy, easy day. My parents were going to come with me to Rodney's graduation ceremony and we were going to have lunch with his parents after. The first meeting. This is big stuff, people.
The night before, I got a call from my mom saying my SIL was at the hospital in labor. What? She wasn't due for another 2.5 weeks. I didn't sleep much that night, worried about SIL and nephew, worried about how the next day would play out.
You see, in my family, when someone has a baby, everyone else waits at the hospital when the baby is almost here. This was my mother's first grandchild and to say she was on edge would be an understatement. I was so torn between going to the hospital, even though there was nothing I could do there, or going to R's graduation, knowing that an engagement was just days away and this was a big deal for him.
In the end, C was born at 8:30 am. I was able to quickly make it to the hospital in time to meet him with the rest of the family, then hurry across town to the university, running across campus in the rain, not appropriately dressed, just to see my sweetheart walk across the stage. R's group was one of the first to go, so I stood in a close spot where I could see him until he walked, then went to an empty part of the auditorium and stared at pictures of C on my camera until the ceremony was finished.
Our parents were still able to meet for lunch as planned, but I'm still amazed that it worked out. They hit it off instantly and the next day we casually mentioned to my parents that we were planning on getting married. Three weeks later a formal engagement followed with the ring. Yes, we did things kind of backwards, but we just knew.
May 5, 2007 is a day that I will remember for a long time.
