Gran

Several years ago my grandmother started exhibiting signs of Alzheimer's Disease. It's an absolutely horrible disease that I wish I didn't know about. She passed away yesterday after a long fight. Isaac and I got to see her one last time on Monday and I'm so glad we did.

My Gran was an awesome cook and baker. My grandfather was the editor of my hometown newspaper for many years, and Gran had her own weekly cooking column, "Billie's Cooking Corner". She ultimately published a cookbook full of those recipes and others. My copy is one of my prized possessions. She wrote this inscription to me when I was only 5 years old.

For Miss Julie, my sweet 5 year old. When you grow up I hope you'll enjoy cooking as much as your mom & Gran. I love you!  Gran

Gran was also my personal seamstress growing up. My mom couldn't sew, so Gran took the lead on that. I can't think of a single store-bought Halloween costume from my childhood. Gran either made it herself or helped me and mom complete our vision. She made several dresses for me, hemmed my pants, and fixed my beloved blankie when the edges got worn.

She wasn't the play on the floor kind of grandparent that my mom is with Isaac, but I spent plenty of time at her house as a child and knew she loved me very much. Gran was the cornerstone of our family for a long time, and she will be greatly missed.
