Everyone loves documenting milestones for babies: first smile, when they sit up, when they crawl, walk. We experienced a milestone this month that I would rather not have.
A couple of weeks ago my mom was here visiting for the day. We had all been upstairs playing and she and Isaac were on their way down the stairs. I didn't see it, but she said he took a small tumble off the bottom step onto the carpeted landing. Not a big deal. He cried for a minute because it scared him (or so we thought), then he was fine. Except he started walking with a limp after that. We were on our way out the door to run some errands, so we figured we would carry him to and from the car and stores and he would sit in the cart and he would forget about his leg by the time we got home.
Wrong.
We came home, ate lunch, and watched Isaac limp around some more. We were getting concerned at this point, but he still didn't act like he was in pain, so we decided to put him down for a nap and assess the situation after that.
Fail.
He stood in his crib and screamed during his nap time, something he never ever does. At first we thought he was just upset that he couldn't play with my mom (one of his top 3 favorite people), but he never fell asleep. At this point we felt like we needed to go to the ER to get him checked out.
We were very fortunate to only have one person in front of us and were seen rather quickly. The doctor was so good with Isaac and examined him in a way that Isaac had no clue he wasn't just playing with him. Everything seemed ok and he wasn't limping as much, but the doctor ordered x-rays just to be sure. My mom stayed and helped hold him in position for the x-rays, and I got to stand outside and listen to him scream. It was horrible.
In the end, the x-rays were clear and there were no fractures. We were in and out of the ER in 50 minutes. Within 2 minutes of being back in the car, Isaac was passed out. It was a long day for a little boy with no nap.
First ER visit: August 10, 2012
