A couple of weeks ago Rodney and I were able to slip away by ourselves for a weekend getaway in beautiful Asheville, NC. We were celebrating the end of the dreaded tax season, and we had no plans other than just relax.
We dropped Isaac off with my parents and made the short drive over the mountain. I have spent several nights away from Isaac in the last 18 months, but always just one night at a time. This was 2 nights, and it was harder to leave him than I anticipated, but I knew I had to take time for my marriage too.
Our weekend turned out to have 3 themes: shop, relax, eat. We started by shopping at REI, Rodney's new favorite store since he has taken an interest in backpacking.

weekend getaway
We found a cute toy store near REI that had the cutest Keurig-type coffee maker that I almost bought for Isaac. He loves helping us make a "hot" every morning, but I just don't think his imagination is where it needs to be for this yet. We decided he would probably get mad when the "hot" didn't come out.
We took a break from shopping and moved on to the eating portion, meeting some of our best friends who just happened to be in Asheville for the day too. We had lunch at the Universal Joint, a small burger place Rodney had eaten at before. The two guys had a U Joint, a larger burger with cheddar, bacon, jalapenos, and ranch. I had a turkey club wrap and A had the smoked tofu tacos. The food was fantastic, and our friends loved it so much, they have been back twice since then.
We spent Friday afternoon shopping, getting checked into the hotel, and resting. We ate dinner at Carrabba's (using a leftover gift card from Christmas) and watched Tower Heist from Redbox.
We really wanted to go to a local place for breakfast on Saturday, and we found several places with great online reviews, but they all mentioned that the places were small and filled up very quickly. We knew it would be even worse on a Saturday morning, and we didn't want to wake up early on vacation just for breakfast, so we slept in and grabbed a little Starbucks to start our day.
We spent the middle part of Saturday shopping, then came back to the hotel for a nice nap before heading downtown for dinner. We spent some time walking around, stopping in at Mast General Store before dinner at Tupelo Honey Cafe.
We started with the warm pimento cheese and tortilla chips. Delicious!
I had a black bean burger and home fries, and Rodney had the shrimp and grits. It was all really really good and we're excited about the new restaurant opening in Knoxville later this year.
Saturday night we watched Iron Man 2, until I got too tired and missed the last 40 minutes. Oops.
We were up fairly early Sunday morning and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel before driving home to pick up Isaac. He wasn't as happy to see us as I would have liked, but instead was upset that he had to leave Nana's house. He had a great time without us.
Life returned back to normal toddler craziness as soon as we got home, but I'm so glad R and I had a chance to get away, just the two of us. I'm ready to go again!
