lesson learned

Here is something interesting about motherhood... just when you think you've got one stage covered, a new stage begins and you have to start learning all over again.

I thought I had this toddler thing down, until spring came and we started playing outside much more. For instance, we used to give Isaac a bath every night mostly because it was just part of our routine, and of course for general cleanliness. Now we give him a bath every night because he is dirty and sweaty and actually needs one.

I now understand the importance of "play clothes" vs. "good clothes" and "play shoes" vs. "good shoes". Last Saturday I was away at a Scentsy party and my mom was watching Isaac. They played outside all afternoon while Rodney mowed the yard. I came home to find Isaac's grey New Balance tennis shoes had a nice film of green along the front. When I asked mom about it, she mentioned that he really needed some play shoes. Until now, we have one pair of shoes that he wears everywhere. One. Ok, fine, we'll get some play shoes. He's almost ready to move up a shoe size anyway.

Monday afternoon I took Isaac outside to play after nap. In front of our house we have what I call the "farm road" that R's uncle uses to access the cow fields.

I was hanging back taking pictures, and had just started to move closer to him when I heard a loud SQUISH. What I didn't know was that there was a giant mud puddle close to the gate, and Isaac had found it. He walked right into it and immediately fell down.

He was ok with it until he stood up, picked his foot up, and left his shoe in the mud as his foot came out. He lost his balance and fell again, which is when he started to freak out. We finally made it back inside where we got cleaned up and stayed inside the rest of the afternoon since his shoes were not fit to be worn right away.

It's official. We will now have play shoes and good shoes.
